Great Leap Brewery in Beijing

December 27, 2010

I have a real problem with Chinese beers, they’re light and sour and all taste the same.  I wanted to comment on a new microbrewery in the Gulou neighborhood of Beijing that I’m looking forward to visiting during the New Years holiday, Great Leap Brewery.  A friend of Liz’s invited her to a pre-opening party a few weeks ago, and apparently someone who has relations to The Atlantic was there and took this photo of her and the brewmaster.  Of note is their honey and 麻辣, mala, (a peppercorn from the Sichuan region of China, famous for the way it numbs your tongue) blonde.

The peppercorn beer sounds rad. Have you tried anything by Hans Beer (I think they might be owned by Tsingtao but am not too sure…)?

They currently have a cinnamon (red?) ale right now that’s made with Chinese cinnamon, which is not as spiced as the cinnamon we’re used to in the States. I’m not really into spiced beer, but it’s very good.

I look silly in this picture. a real doofus.
