Coal briquettes for the food stalls

August 9, 2010

Coal briquettes for the food stalls, originally uploaded by timquijano.

Terrible for air quality and carbon emissions of course, but coal is a very cheap source of energy, used heavily up here in Northeastern China. I can’t imagine how much worse the air quality is in the winter when everybody’s throwing these into their inefficient furnaces. When I asked a Chinese friend why there was smoke arising from a stack on campus, there’s no heating going on here at this time of the year. Hot water though. Geez, that seems inefficient. To be expected I guess.
