Manual labor is so cheap in China and the streets in the Hutong areas of Beijing are so narrow that it makes sense economically to carry bricks for construction by hand. Beijing is ripping up traditional Siheyuan hutong housing in a very controversial move and replacing them with high-rise apartment buildings. In a concession to criticism, they have began replacing some of the demolished hutong buildings with these new similar-styled buildings.
