zhang yimou

January 5, 2010

as i see it, zhang yimou demonstrates two trends in the past decade of chinese filmmaking: trying to maintain the domestic market (only 20 foreign movies are allowed to be shown in chinese cinemas annually) and increasing cooperation with the government. i wrote a paper a while back on western conception of chinese filmmakers as constantly trying to push the envelope in terms of politically evocative subjects. this conception is more or less completely false. their attempts at liberalisation are more out of practicality.

anyway, this story at npr got me thinking about this stuff again.
