old news: russia flag on the north pole

January 5, 2010

i was recently reminded me of this story. in august 2007, russia put a flag on the north pole. ridiculous, i know. a few quotes:

Sergei Balyasnikov,Russian Arctic and Antarctic Institute: ”It’s a very important move for Russia to demonstrate its potential in the Arctic… It’s like putting a flag on the Moon”

i wonder who he’s referring to.

Canadian Foreign Minister Peter MacKay:  ”This isn’t the 15th Century,”

the new russia development strategy, developing natural (usually energy-oil, gas) resources to export to the world market is motivating this expansionism. the north pole is thought to hold significant oil and gas.
