misinterpretations of hip-hop

January 5, 2010

one aspect of hip hop a lot of people whine about is the glorification of mindless consumerism. my usual response is to delineate party rap and hip-hop. while party rap celebrates a thoughtless moment of cash in which a tired image of success is replayed as the ability to give money back to the all-powerful institutions that lent a piece of the pie in the first place, chill rap/hip-hop celebrates the ability to have a few brews, some herb and forget about work.

in reality though, i don’t know what i’m talking about. i just like what i like.
